Continue getting our features and updates: switch to our NEW “Boating Marine & Lakes” app and keep all your charts and data, at no additional cost: 1. Update this app and open it. Follow the procedure to download our NEW Boating app and transfer all your data to it. The hardest part of the Navionics UI to handle is how to look up information on a spot on the map. They just made this easier on the iOS version. When scrolling around there is a crosshairs, and the icon on the right (a question mark) will show you information about that point (scroll over a nav mark or current arrow to see how it works).
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

For a newbie sailor, seems pretty good
Mostly I like it. I found a few things confusing though:
- why no option to display magnetic headings? Boats have magnetic compasses, so would be nice on a route to be able to display a magnetic heading. Airplane apps like ForeFlight have this because planes also have magnetic compasses. Sure, I could calculate manually, but if I wanted to do that I’d just use a paper chart and a gps unit. Help us out here, it’s not hard to implement. - saving a route you just made to your route list is not obvious, there’s no “save to archives” button or anything. I looked there and my route didn’t show up. Later it did. Please try to follow the principle of least surprise for ui development. - would be nice if you could click on map icons and find out what they meant. The little fish icon with a circle and line through it is obvious, some others are not. That said, this is a nice app. Thoroughly enjoyed playing with it on a recent short trip! Developer Response,
Thank you for your review.
Currently, our apps do not include the option for magnetic headings; however, your feedback will certainly be passed along to our developers for review and consideration with future updates. The route planning function within the app is also an active navigation module. To this end, when planning a route, you would need to press the green GO button at the bottom of the screen to save it into your archive. This also begins the active navigation of the route you have created. To cancel out of the route or create a new route after saving, tap the Route button and then the Stop option. Our charts do include additional information regarding the icons used within them. You can get a popup description by putting your crosshairs over the object. More information is available if you pull up the crosshairs and tap the question mark on the right. This will bring up the Quick Info page for objects in the general area of your crosshairs and if there is an arrow to the right of the object, there is additional details regarding it. See https://navionics.secure.force.com/kb/articles/en_US/Knowledge_Article/Mobile-Chart-Icons-Abbreviations-and-Symbols for more information and a link to the government chart book with all icons, symbols and abbreviations we may use. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact us at [email protected] referencing case #443791. Fixed![]()
They’ve fixed the bug that was preventing opening. This app doesn’t have many features, as compared to something like iNavx, which is very complete, but the Navionics interface is so easy to use and it’s so easy to make and modify routes that despite the lack of other features, it is still very good. If they added some capabilities like import/export routes or the ability to receive other sorts of data (like AIS, for instance), this app would be far superior to anything else. If you don’t need all the other features, this is a good choice.
Useless as a companion app
I have a Lowrance chart plotter and purchased a Navonics map for about $100 which works great. I downloaded this as a companion app for my iPad to plan fishing trips. But at $55 a year, it's just not worth it! What a joke! The app is worthless without paying a subscription fee every year, because the 'government chart' shows no depth at all. I have better luck downloading a real 'Government chart' in PDF format from the MN DNR website. I am removing this app and will never buy another Navonics map as long as I live. They have got way to greedy.
